Ready To Try Deep Water Solo?
Deep Water Solo is not cliff jumping, it also is not soloing El Cap ....
It is, however, the most amazing day out on the Andaman sea any climber could hope for. A day spend bouldering on steep limestone over crash pads made from the tropical ocean. If you are on a climbing trip in Krabi, it would be foulish not to check out the Deep Water Solo as it is the most accessible spot on earth and safe also for new climbers.
We use the tropical waters as our crash pads and a longtail boat as our basecamp in front of the crag. For this reason trips are dependent on wind and wave conditions. During high season which runs from November to April most days allow us to organise trips. But we are still at the mercy of nature and cannot guarantee a trip on a certain date.
Plan to spend a few days in Tonsai or at least Railay to make organising a DWS trip easier for yourself. A DWS trip is not booking a time-slot in a gym. Being flexible regarding what day you can join a trip increases your chance a lot. Put your name on our sign-up at Basecamp Tonsai and spend a few days regular climbing on most amazing routes ever opened on limestone anywhere on the third star from the sun.
We need 4 climbers (or 6.000THB if you cannot wait for enough climbers to join) to run a DWS trip and can take maximum 7 climbers each trip. Please buy your ticket early to avoid disappointment. Best time to do so is one or two days before. Again please understand that we sometimes have to cancel DWS trips due to unsafe weather and/or wave conditions. This also makes online booking very difficult. Sorry, due to bad experiences we need 4 paid tickets to organise the trip and will not prepare a trip on bases of an e-mail or text message alone.
The departure time varies with the tide and the trip is 3 to 5 hours for deep water soloing on two different crags. In between climbing, we take a lunch break on a beach with some good bouldering. Great place to snorkel as well. The price is 1.500 THB per person. We supply old climbing shoes, snorkel masks, lunch, and drinking water. Our food containers are reusable, please bring a wide-mouth bottle for water.
Again, here is how to fail to get on a DWS trip:
Come in low season when the waves and strong wind may not allow the boat to go out for days sometimes weeks.
Stay far away from Tonsai on the mainland so you cannot come and check the sign-up sheet.
Have only one possible day and when a DWS trip is going the next day cannot be flexible.
Here is how to succeed:
Plan to spend at least 5 days climbing on the best limestone crags Asia has to offer.
Stay in Railay or better Tonsai.
Walk by Basecamp early morning or around sunset to sign-up and check when the next DWS trip is going.
Pay or deposit on your ticket so we know you are comitted. If we cannot go, we refund, of course.
Meanwhile enjoy paradise.
